YH2 Capital Management expands the YH2 Capital Scholarship Programme

Increase fully funded, bond-free Scholarships for two Malaysian students for undergraduate studies at Magdalene College, University of Cambridge

Singapore/ Kuala Lumpur, 6 September 2021 – YH2 Capital Management today announced the expansion of the YH2 Capital Scholarship programme in conjunction with Magdalene College, Cambridge University to fully empower two students, up from one student previously, to pursue their dream of studying at Cambridge University, without being constrained by financial means or choice of prospective employment.

The YH2 Capital Scholarship programme now offers up to two fully funded, bond-free Scholarships to Malaysians each year for undergraduate study at Magdalene College, University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. The value of each Scholarship can be up to £220,000 (more than RM1 million) for a four-year undergraduate course.

The selection committee of the Scholarship is looking for up to two outstanding Malaysian candidates with exemplary academic and personal qualities who will not have the full financial means to pursue a degree at the University of Cambridge without the help of the Scholarship.

Mr Tai Yen How, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of YH2 Capital Management, said, “We would like to expand the YH2 Scholarship this year as we believe that the pandemic has imposed undue hardships on a lot of people. The unprecedented disruptions and financial duress are especially challenging for young people in their academic pursuits. We think that perhaps more people are in need of financial assistance, which is why we have decided to double the number of scholars we sponsor. Time is tough, but we hope young people not to be dispirited and lose hope.”

“The Scholarship is fully funded and bond-free scholarship exclusively for two Malaysian students to study at the University of Cambridge. This presents a unique opportunity for students to freely select the subject that they feel passionate about, rather than accommodating to whatever scholarship that is available or other practical concerns.” Mr Tai said.

“As a Malaysian, my personal experience has also made me realise that there are many talented students in Malaysia that may not have the same access to scholarships to study overseas. This is also in line with our philosophy in life and investment, that we hope to uncover hidden gems and give them a chance to shine,” Mr Tai said.

Ms Barbara Yu, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of YH2 Capital Management, said, “We were also very encouraged by the experience of our first scholar, Ms Teoh Yun Xin, who has far exceeded our expectations and achieved a first-class honour in her first year of studying law at Cambridge despite all the challenges she has had. We believe that there are many other people who will benefit from our Scholarships especially during the pandemic. We intentionally provided this Scholarship as a bond-free scholarship, so that the recipient of this Scholarship can be free to choose their career post-graduation from the University of Cambridge.”

“As a Magdalene alumna and once a recipient of a bond-free scholarship for my undergraduate studies, I wanted to repay the society and pass on the kindness to others who will need such financial help,” Ms Yu said.

Magdalene College has its origins in the year 1428 and is renowned for its eclectic mix of buildings, warm and friendly atmosphere, diverse community, and traditional yet relaxed environment. Magdalene is also one of the smaller Cambridge Colleges that only admits about 105 undergraduates each year, which helps to foster a family atmosphere and sense of close-knit community. Magdalene also has a history of admitting a relatively large percentage of international students.

Sir Christopher Greenwood, Master of Magdalene College, said, “I am delighted that the wonderful generosity of Barbara Yu and Tai Yen How has made two Scholarships possible this year and very much look forward to welcoming the new scholars to Magdalene. As Master of Magdalene – and an alumnus – I am passionate about our commitment to enabling people to realise their potential in a warm, friendly and inclusive community. Having spent my childhood in Singapore and Malaysia and witnessed at first hand their commitment to education, it is an additional personal pleasure that the College has this strong link with them.”

Applicants for the Scholarship must name Magdalene College as the College of choice on their application to University of Cambridge and received a conditional offer of a place at Magdalene College.
